A GLOBAL CHALLENGE
COVID-19 impacts all of us. It reminds us of our shared humanity and unites us around a common purpose.
Our Hackathon is not the first of its kind. Without benefiting from lessons learned from pioneers in this space such as the #WirvsVirus Hackathon sponsored by the German Government, we could not have pulled this initiative together in such a short time frame.
We don’t want to duplicate efforts and aim to build on solutions that others have already considered. This is a list of the challenges translated into English. Out of the more than 800 challenges addressed during the #WirvsVirus Hackathon, 80 were work-related and themed into the following categories:
· How might workers be effectively distributed?
· How might working parents ensure childcare in times of physical distancing?
· How might we optimize remote work?
· How might we support the agricultural sector (shortage of harvest workers)?
That’s why we also want to build solutions that can serve as inspiration across countries and are not tied to just one national context.
EXPERIMENTATION MINDSET
Experimentation and agility are key design thinking mindsets. This is our first ever Virtual Hackathon. Instead of carefully planning and testing it first, we decided to get this out fast. The COVID-19 crisis demands a bold response now. But that means that we are fully expecting to fail with some parts of the Hackathon experience. That could be technology temporarily not working or the flow of the event not always going to plan. We promise that we will listen to your feedback and react in an agile way. And we will be very transparent about it. In return, we ask for your patience and support as we sort through the challenges at hand. Together, we hope we will make magic happen!
OPEN SOURCE
We encourage all Hackathon solutions to be developed in an open source way so Hackathon ideas and prototypes can be rapidly implemented. The use of open source software is free, it is customizable, and everybody can discover and solve mistakes. Projects also come to fruition quicker when they are the result of collaboration from multiple contributors.
